caring for your extensions
Your hair extensions are an investment! Follow these best practices to prolong the life of your extension hair. These tips below can also be applied to your natural hair.
cleansing.
Do not wash your freshly installed extensions until 48 hours after install.
Extensions should not be washed more than 2 x per week. Use sulfate free shampoo only. The more you wash, the shorter time the extension hair will last.
Always brush and detangle before washing.
Shampoo twice and put your fingers sideways in a “peace” sign to wash underneath and on top of the rows or get in between your bonds. Rinse very well to avoid shampoo build up.
Condition from your ears down avoiding the top of the weft or bonds. Conditioner can cause the beads or bonds to slide.
Use purple shampoo very sparingly or not at all as the extensions will take on the purple pigment way more than your natural hair and leave you with extensions that don’t match!
brushing and drying.
Brush extensions 2x daily and apply oil from mids to ends 1 x a day.
Spray hair with detangler and apply your heat protector.
Towel dry your hair gently as much as possible before blow drying
Using your extension brush, brush from the bottom of the hair and work your way up to the top keeping your palms on the points of attachment to avoid tugging.
Blow dry the hair in sections starting at the roots. Avoid over blow drying your natural hair as extension hair takes longer to dry. Clip your natural hair away and blow dry the extension hair first.
Air drying and extensions don’t mix. If you must, blow dry your roots and then you can air dry the rest of the hair. If you leave wefts or keratin bonds wet at the root, they can smell musty and the bonds can get gummy.
Style as usual always using a heat protector keeping hot tools away from point of attachment
sleeping.
Avoid going to bed with wet extensions.
Brush your extensions and apply hair oil starting from the ends and working your way up into the mids. Your natural hair will love this too!
Style in low braid and tie with a silk or satin scrunchie.
Sleep on a silk or a satin pillowcase to avoid friction.
In the morning, let out your loose braid and brush. Your style should still be intact from the day before!
extra tips.
If swimming in salt or chlorine water, completely wet hair down, apply a leave in conditioner avoiding the point of attachment, put in a braid or bun and try not to submerse your entire head in the water. If you must, rinse out chlorine and salt water immediately after.
For washing more than one row of wefts, separate each section into its own bun and wash and rinse each section separately starting at the bottom section and working your way up.
Keep a purse brush and brush your hair throughout the day to keep your hair tangle free.
In the morning, brush out the hair and apply some dry shampoo at the roots if needed.
The only products that should be touching your extension points of attachment is shampoo and dry shampoo.
Use mineral sunscreen only if your extensions are going to be touching your skin. Non mineral sunscreen can cause lighter shades of extension hair to go peach!
